Harrisonburg officials and the FBI are investigating allegations of voter registration fraud after officials say almost 20 voter applications were turned in under the names of dead people.

Harrisonburg Registrar Debbie Logan said Thursday that investigators have found from 18 to 20 potentially fraudulent registrations. The Rockingham County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office confirmed Thursday that an investigation is underway, but offered no additional details on the case.

The applications were turned in by a voter registration group called HarrisonburgVOTES, officials said. The group’s representatives could not be reached for comment Thursday. No charges have been filed.

The Breeze, the student newspaper of James Madison University, reported that the applications were submitted by a student working for the group. The problem came to light when an employee in the registrar’s office noticed a new registration had come in from Richard Claybrook Sr., the late father of a well-known local judge. ... “When they used a distinguished resident of Harrisonburg’s name and address, it came to the attention of an employee who has worked in the city for many years,” Logan said.

5. Is it that you "don't," or that you "don't have to?" It's been so long that I can't recall.

I am aware that in Virginia, one can show up at one or the other party's primary and vote.

Thanks.

3. Saw this headline this morning. Let's cover the basics.

First, it was caught. That "citizen" is also a very dedicated public servant Speaker Howell.

Second, as Del. Simon and the articles states, either someone would have to commit other felonies to vote in person or there would have to be a matching address for ONE VOTE to slide through.

The most likely explanation from this is (in order):
1. Someone getting paid by the hour made up fake names to show they'd been doing what they were being paid for
2. Republican operation (most likely young Republicans) did this to create the story. Multiple examples of this over the last 10 years.
3. Someone really is risking felony convictions to create 20 votes.

Number one is certainly the most likely. The student has confessed and I would bet he explained his motive. We will have to wait for the investigation to end to find out what it was.

I doubt that any votes would have been attempted for these 19 registrations. Again, we will just have to wait for the details of the investigation. With Virginia's photo ID law, in person would be difficult. With absentee ballots you've got to have an address. 19 would be difficult.

A young male student might have done this to impress a female student.

I think he is in a lot of trouble.

JMU student under investigation for alleged voter fraud

Brooke Blaney | The Breeze
Sep 15, 2016

A JMU student allegedly committed voter fraud recently using the identities of deceased people while working to register voters through HarrisonburgVOTES.

“He turned in 19 voters to the registrar [of] folks that were deceased,” said a source with HarrisonburgVOTES, who wished to remain anonymous to avoid connecting the accused student with any campus organizations.

The suspect worked for this organization for about nine weeks while he allegedly submitted both legitimate and fraudulent voter registration forms. HarrisonburgVOTES isn’t involved in this case. While The Breeze has identified this student, it has chosen to withhold any identifying information until a charge occurs.
....

HarrisonburgVOTES takes no responsibility for the student’s actions. Several members of this organization supported the termination of his position. ... “We realized they were bad forms and [the student] was immediately fired,” the anonymous source said.

Since HRC is currently ahead in VA, could be a James O'keefe-style GOP fuckery to cause doubt about the election results and supported with Donald's "system is rigged if I don't win" bs that the deplorables buy into. Not that 20 names of the deceased will actually sway the election in Donald's favor here.

8. If the student is registered, he is simply registered as a voter.

No party affiliation is asked nor recorded by Virginia.

Records are kept of which primary you participated in. Looking at our State Board of Elections website I can see what I've done, but haven't seen a way to look at anyone else.

when you register to vote in VA, my question was more out of curiosity as to motive.
