CHARLOTTESVILLE — A former University of Virginia student and grandson of a former Virginia governor has been charged with rape in connection with an incident in February.

Stephen Dalton Baril, 20, of Richmond, was arrested by Charlottesville police on Wednesday morning after he turned himself in to the magistrate’s office. According to authorities, Baril faces charges of rape and forcible sodomy in connection with a Feb. 1 incident.

Hours after his arrest, Baril made his first appearance in district court, where Judge Robert Downer agreed to set a $10,000 bond for his release. At the hearing, city prosecutor Areshini Pather gave a rundown of the allegations against Baril.

In court, Baril’s father testified that, if left in his parents’ custody, Baril would not have access to drugs or alcohol. He further said that Baril was no longer enrolled at U.Va., saying it was “very difficult under the circumstances for him to continue” his education.
