Charlottesville plans alternate events, urges ignoring Klan rally

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- While some people may choose to stay home or attend dissimilar public events, it will be all hands on deck for area police officers when the Ku Klux Klan arrives in Charlottesville for a rally in Justice Park on July 8.

At a 3 p.m. news conference Tuesday, Charlottesville Police Chief Al Thomas said that a safety plan for the rally has been drafted, and that Albemarle County and University of Virginia police officers will be on standby that day.

“I hope that July 8 will be remembered as a day of unity — not a day of hate and fear,” Thomas said. “Fear will not define this community.”

Following his comments, city officials and members of the business and faith communities announced a schedule of family-friendly public events that will be held throughout the day at the Jefferson School City Center, the Ix Art Park and the Sprint Pavilion.

I'm not sure if the police will allow the Kazoo band to parade past the KKK rally, but it is a public sidewalk. Ten Kazoos are a pain, what will 100 be?

As soon as the permit application for the KKK rally became public knowledge there was a lot of strong negative reaction on social media.

My first thought was: "No cops, no media, no passers by, even the birds and squirrels head somewhere else, and no counter rally. Totally ignore these bastards. What a great message that would be, that they are not worth anybody's time and are totally irrelevant. they can stand around and look stupid(er)." However, most say they cannot ignore them. There will be 50 to 100 KKKers per their permit, I expect the other events will draw over 1000. At the KKK rally the media and police will outnumber them.
