Salary boost for Virginia workers, $100 fines for left lane dawdlers highlight new laws

A 3 percent pay raise for state workers and a boost in pay for Virginia State Police - both parts of the state's new $107 billion two-year budget - highlight hundreds of state laws that go into effect Saturday.

Left lane dawdlers also now face possible $100 fines for failing to drive on the right side of highways.

State employee pay raises take effect in the pay period that begins July 10. State workers will see the raise in the paycheck they receive on Aug. 1.

Virginia State Police get a $7,000 boost in starting salary, as well as pay for veteran officers to reverse an exodus of experienced troopers to other law enforcement.
