UVa to repay KKK's donation by helping cover costs for rally's injured

UVa to repay KKK's donation by helping cover costs for rally's injured

The University of Virginia will repay a 1921 pledge from the Klu Klux Klan, university President Teresa A. Sullivan announced Thursday morning.

The university will donate an inflation-adjusted amount of $12,500 to the Charlottesville Patient Support Fund to help with medical expenses of those injured during the Aug. 11 and 12 white supremacist rallies. The original pledge, donated towards rebuilding Memorial gym, and received by then-president Edwin Alderman, was $1,000.

“We’re going to acknowledge that pledge, and we’re going to do it in a way that will be as disagreeable as possible to any remnants of the Ku Klux Klan who are watching,” Sullivan said. “In other words, we’re allocating that centuries old pledge from white supremacists to heal the wounds inflicted by the dying vestiges of white supremacy that struck Charlottesville last month.”

The support fund is managed by the UVa Health Foundation. About two dozen people were treated for injuries at UVa Medical Center on Aug. 12, according to the hospital. Heather Heyer died after being struck by a car.
