Enough is enough! Havent we had enough slave owner bashing that we are now going after Confederate citizen memorials?
Referencing the April 28 Roanoke Times article, Arlington board asks to rename Davis Highway:
Within 10 minutes of Googling a couple of prominent previous citizens of Virginia, I happened upon enough fodder to keep the change or erase history faction folks busy for a while.

(8,201 posts)The names are familiar because they are the names of streets in my city.
A local school is named after a slaver.
Later, some of the members of these families became abolitionists when being an abolitionist would get you kicked out of your church.
(But even the abolitionists were happy to make money from slave-picked cotton. Or ivory. Or by sending supplies to the West Indies.)
In my city, we're having a walk soon to discuss our local monuments. Who do we celebrate and who do we forget? I imagine we'll discuss that old murderer, Columbus, whose statue was erected in 1928 as my city's Italian immigrant population became numerous enough to demand respect. (In my city, when the statue went up, the Italian anti-fascists attacked the fascists before the Columbus Day parade, and the fascists marched with police protection.)
I would take down Confederate monuments everywhere. But a year ago, I might have said take down the damn Columbus statue, too. Now I don't know. Those stories. Will we still tell the stories if the monuments come down? Or will we forget, and stop bashing, those figures who deserve to be eternally bashed?
