Its not a normal tax refund, but almost 350,000 Virginia taxpayers are running out of time to receive a one-time payment this fall as part of the states response to federal tax reform.
Gov. Ralph Northam sounded the alarm on Tuesday for taxpayers to file their tax returns by July 1 to qualify for a one-time refund of $110 for individuals and $220 for married couples by mid-October.
With the filing deadline fast approaching, I urge all Virginians who still need to submit state individual income taxes to file now so they can qualify for the Tax Relief Refund, Northam said in a written announcement.
Secretary of Finance Aubrey Layne had raised the issue a day earlier before the House Appropriations Committee, which fashioned the tax relief package with the Senate Finance Committee and Northam administration earlier this year. The package is designed to compensate Virginia taxpayers who may pay more in state taxes as an unforeseen consequence of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that President Donald Trump signed 18 months ago.

(56,886 posts)File Your Individual Income Taxes by midnight on July 1
If you havent yet filed your Virginia individual income taxes, Virginia Tax is encouraging you to take action now, so you dont miss an important deadline.
Taxpayers must file by midnight on Monday, July 1, 2019, to qualify for the Tax Relief Refund. The refund is the result of new state legislation conforming the commonwealths tax law to the federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. An individual filer could receive up to $110 and a married couple filing a joint return could receive up to $220. The refund is not to exceed the taxpayers liability, and the law requires the checks to be mailed out by Oct. 15, 2019.
Some factors could reduce the Tax Relief Refund including:
If you owe Virginia state taxes for 2018 or for any previous tax years, Virginia Tax will withhold all or part of the refund and apply it to outstanding tax bills; and
If you owe money to Virginia local governments, courts, other state agencies or the IRS, Virginia Tax will withhold all or part of the refund to help pay these debts.
Here are some other tips to help Virginia Tax process your return more smoothly ensure your name, address and Social Security number are correct on your return; file electronically; and include your Virginia drivers license or Virginia identification card number on your return.
