Backstory: Remembering Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's visit to VMI in 2017

The Roanoke Times 3 hrs ago

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died Friday at age 87, visited Virginia Military Institute in 2017 for a public appearance at Cameron Hall that Roanoke Times reporter Laurence Hammack covered with photojournalist Stephanie Klein-Davis.

Ginsburg wrote the majority opinion in a groundbreaking 1996 decision that found that state-supported Virginia Military Instiute's male-only admissions policy was unconstitutional. The decision in United States v. Virginia found that the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause included equality of the sexes.

This tiny little powerhouse of a woman affected the rights of millions thru the years following.

Thank you Pres Bill Clinton for loaning America 'Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg'.

He saw to it that human & civil rights of minorities of color, gender, & creed would one day be counted as equal.

He sealed that promise with the appointment of our dear RBG.

Wiki history:

June 15, 1993, Clinton announced that he had chosen Ginsburg.
The Senate confirmed Ginsburg in a 96–3 vote on August 3, 1993.
Senators Jesse Helms (R-NC), Don Nickles (R-OK) and Bob Smith (R-NH) voted against the nomination. Donald Riegle (D-MI) did not vote.
