Next year, REAL ID takes effect, and your standard Washington driver's license won't let you fly.

If you live in Washington, like to travel and don't want to bring your passport on domestic flights, you have a little less than one year to get an enhanced license before REAL ID takes effect.

REAL ID, a federal law which takes effect on Oct. 1, 2020, establishes a minimum security standards for state-issued ID cards. A standard Washington state driver's license or ID does not meet these minimums, but an enhanced driver's license or enhanced identification card does.

A standard ID costs $54 for six years. An enhanced ID costs $78 for six years. To upgrade your standard ID to an enhanced one, the fee is $4 per year for the time remaining on your license (up to $24 if you just got a standard ID). ID holders will also need to prove they are citizens to get one. A full list of acceptable documents to show citizenship is available at this link.

The REAL ID law, passed in 2005 in the wake of 9/11, requires all ID cards have security enhancements and may only be issued to people who can prove they are legally in the country.

But, if you don't want to shell out the extra cash for an enhanced license by October 2020, other documents will still allow you to cross the border or enter an airport. A passport or passport card, whether foreign or American, are acceptable. A permanent resident card also works. For a full list, click here.

I have no idea where the hell ours might be. I don't see what it has to do with proving my identity anyway. Good thing I've had a passport nearly all my life.

As an aside, I thought this policy had gone in effect a couple of years ago or more. I've seen warnings at Sea-Tac about it for years saying it was going to be enforced in just a few months.

I called the BMV before I went. They told me next year the laws would be more stringent..
And that marriage license has to be the official, not the fancy one.

I did clean out my old records and put them all together, though.
