Naval Hospital sailor turns used medical wraps into sleeping pads for the homeless

BREMERTON — Cozzette Baldwin, a surgical technologist at Naval Hospital Bremerton, started noticing last year the amount of blue medical wrap that was being discarded from the operating room.

The blue material — known as muslin wrap — is used to cover medical instruments to ensure sanitation. But once the wrap is pulled off, it’s usually destined for a landfill.

“We would just throw it away and it's almost as clean as when we get it,” Baldwin said.

The 22-year-old hospitalman thought there had to be a way to recycle the material, which couldn’t be re-used at the hospital because of sterilization standards.

Inspired by a Facebook group that turned medical materials into pads for the homeless, Baldwin came up with an idea to go green with the blue wrap — sewing muslin into recycled sleeping pads and carrying bags that could be donated to those who are homeless.
