Naval Hospital sailor turns used medical wraps into sleeping pads for the homeless
BREMERTON Cozzette Baldwin, a surgical technologist at Naval Hospital Bremerton, started noticing last year the amount of blue medical wrap that was being discarded from the operating room.
The blue material known as muslin wrap is used to cover medical instruments to ensure sanitation. But once the wrap is pulled off, its usually destined for a landfill.
We would just throw it away and it's almost as clean as when we get it, Baldwin said.
The 22-year-old hospitalman thought there had to be a way to recycle the material, which couldnt be re-used at the hospital because of sterilization standards.
Inspired by a Facebook group that turned medical materials into pads for the homeless, Baldwin came up with an idea to go green with the blue wrap sewing muslin into recycled sleeping pads and carrying bags that could be donated to those who are homeless.
