Washington's new overtime pay rule will benefit 'tens of thousands'
The state on Wednesday announced new wage rules that will restore overtime protection to "tens of thousands" of white-collar salaried workers across Washington, said Department of Labor and Industries director Joel Sachs. The new standards will be phased in starting next July, to be fully implemented by 2028.
Washington's salaried workers have gone 43 years since there was a change in the minimum salary level for those not receiving overtime. They wow have the nation's strongest overtime protection.
"This is an incredible day for Washington," Gov. Jay Inslee said in a statement. "We need to make sure the middle class shares in our state's prosperity: Overtime protections ensure workers are fairly compensated when they work more than 40 hours in a given week -- time that would otherwise be spent with their families and in their communities."
A months-long consultation process saw strong support from labor and progressive groups, while business cautioned against raising wage thresholds too quickly. The seven-year phase-in, with different rates for large and small employers, reflects arguments made by business.
