Plastic bag ban in Snohomish arrives on New Year's Day

SNOHOMISH — Plastic bags will be banned in many corners of Snohomish starting New Year’s Day.

And retailers can be fined if they don’t comply with the city’s prohibition.

The Snohomish City Council passed an ordinance in February aimed at ending the practice of packing customer purchases in plastic bags in many stores. Since then, businesses have been allowed to hand out plastic bags without consequences to get rid of their stock.

Starting Wednesday , shoppers will need to have their own bag or, if they need one, be prepared to buy a paper one for 10 cents each. Grocery store shoppers who receive food assistance won’t be charged for paper bags.

It is hard getting use to bringing my own bags. I will even get as far as having them in the car and forget to grab them. Then I carry groceries out or pay .05 for a paper bag and use it for my glass bottles with recycling. I had fun a couple weeks ago. I had a cheap Walmart bag with other Trader Joe bags. I used my Trader Joes and had the Walmart bag left over. The lady behind me had forgotten her bag. So, I was able to pass forward the Walmart bag. It is a fun exchange in sharing and embracing our efforts to not be so destructive in our waste.

for over a year. When I go shopping and the clerks can't believe ot when they see my old, thin bags and not the heavy duty plastic ones they sell for use now. I still forget them and would have to run out to my car to get them and hold up the entire line so I have to buy one of their newer bags (they even charge for paper ones).

The people who reuse their single use plastic bags for garbage can now buy heavier plastic bags from the likes of the koch brothers or use paper from trees that have been cut down. Seems like a big loss to me.
