Fake Seattle City Light warnings: Old scam at dawn of new year

The telephone scam is years old, and has surfaced at the end of the old year.

An 800 number flashes on your phone. A preemptory voice announced: "This is Seattle City Light: Your power will be cut off in a half-hour for non-payment of bill." The customer is given a number to call.

The city's electrical utility has three pieces of advice for its customers: "Spot it. Report it! Stop it!"

"City Light customers, and utility customers around the nation, have been receiving calls by scammers posing at utility employees threatening to shut off power if a payment is not immediately made. The scammers are targeting elderly, non-English speaking customers and business owners."
