Stepped up police patrols at Alki Beach on hold for now
A plan to step up patrols of Alki Beach has been put on hold just one day after it launched.
Seattle Police Department had partnered with the city's Parks and Recreation Department to field an enforcement team of three uniformed officers who would patrol the area around the time that bars in the neighborhood were closing. But police Capt. Kevin Grossman on Friday informed neighbors in the area that the effort has hit a snag because of funding.
"I learned yesterday that any movement of funds from one city agency (e.g., Parks) to another (e.g., SPD) requires city council approval," Grossman wrote. "So until that issue is resolved, the dedicated Alki emphasis patrols will be paused."
Residents had requested stepped up enforcement after neighbors said that crime in the area was worsening, citing a recent drive-by double shooting.
