Seattle City Council overrides mayoral veto over plan to tap rainy day fund
The Seattle City Council voted 6-2 Wednesday to override a veto by Mayor Jenny Durkan that would have prohibited the city from spending money from its cash reserve fund in order to provide relief from those affected by COVID-19.
Council members introduced the legislation as a means of providing immediate assistance to city residents in need of help with groceries, their rent or shelter after suffering a cororonavirus-related emergency. Under the terms of the measure, funds would come from the city's emergency reserves, virtually wiping out the account that would be used if City Hall encountered an emergency expense that the city had not budgeted for.
In her veto message, Durkan said COVID relief is needed in the city but the council should not drain the city's cash reserves to fund the relief effort.
The council needed six votes to override the mayor's veto, which it did with only members Andrew Lewis and Alex Pedersen voting no.
