Washington Huskies' season opener canceled due to Cal positive COVID-19 case, contact tracing
The Washington Huskies football team wont be making their season debut this weekend after all.
The Pac-12 conference announced Thursday that it has approved Cals request to cancel its game vs. UW on Saturday. The Golden Bears reported Wednesday that one of their football players had a positive test for COVID-19, and they dont have the minimum number of scholarship players available for the contest due to contact tracing protocols.
Under Conference policy, the game will be declared a no contest, the Pac-12 said. The health and safety of our student-athletes and all those connected to Pac-12 football programs will continue to be our number one priority.
Cal head football coach Justin Wilcox had said Wednesday that a significant number of his players needed to quarantine due to the positive test, and acknowledged that the game was in danger of postponement. Cals athletic department was in contact with UW officials Wednesday night about the status of Saturdays game.
