High Wind Warnings posted for parts of region as another storm takes aim at Northwest

A very windy day is on tap for parts of Western Washington on Tuesday as another windstorm takes aim at our region, though for the Puget Sound region, it looks like it's going to be more of a "glancing blow." But for the coast and northern reaches of Western Washington, damaging wind speeds are still likely.

High Wind Warnings are now in effect Tuesday for the entire Washington coast and Northwest Interior -- which is essentially Skagit and Whatcom Counties west to the Port Townsend area and then north to the Canadian border, including the San Juan, Whidbey and Camano Islands -- for gusts as high as 55-60 mph, according to the National Weather Service. The warning is in effect from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. along the coast and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the NW Interior. Those winds speeds are likely to cause some power outages and tree damage.

A powerful and rapidly-deepening storm center is forecast to approach the Pacific Northwest on Monday, and then pass by well off the Washington Monday night into Tuesday. Some forecast projections have the center storm pressure as low as in the 958-968 millibar range, which is on par with some of the strongest storms you'll see around here in the autumn and winter, creating very intense differences in pressure in the region which in turn will create potentially damaging winds in the vicinity.

However, the storm track is expected to remain well offshore as it heads north, eventually making landfall around the northern tip of Vancouver Island Tuesday afternoon. This is a storm track that would spare the Puget Sound region from those damaging winds as the Olympic Mountains will act as a barrier between the region and the storm center to prevent a direct wind tunnel. Wind gusts around the greater Puget Sound area are expected to generally top out in the 30-35 mph range with maybe a rogue gust to 40 mph with minimal-to-no impacts expected.

The tree that just hit our roof was only about 9 inches across and soft so it shattered without causing damage. Tomorrow may be wild, a good day to stay home. As nws says...
People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if
you must drive.
