Suspect accused of targeting Asian American victims with racial slurs pleads not guilty

A man accused of shouting racial slurs at Asian American victims during at least two incidents pleaded not guilty Thursday to hate crime charges during a first appearance hearing.

The King County Superior Court judge agreed to set bail for Christopher Hamner at $10,000 but also said his release was contingent upon Hamner staying away from his victims and agreeing to electronic home monitoring.

An attorney for Hamner, who has no prior criminal history and is scheduled to return to court in May, said his client suffers from mental illness and should be released on his own recognizance to obtain professional help. But the judge denied that request.

The judge prohibited reporters from recording Hamner's face although the alleged victims who were on the receiving end of his taunts took photos and video of him, which led to his arrest.

Odd to say the least.

SEATTLE (KOMO) — A Black Lives Matter protester who spent time at CHOP is now charged with hate crimes against Asian-American women.

Prominent activists and organizers in the BLM movement told KOMO News they remember Christopher Hamner, but not for his contributions. One remembers his “creepy stares,” and another said his actions seemed “to come out of left field.”

Seattle police arrested Hamner last month for two separate incidents of alleged anti-Asian hate attacks. Pamela Cole said Hamner threatened her and her young children when they tried to drive past him.

“He just opens his door and starts yelling at me. ‘F’ you, you Asian ‘B’. ‘F’ you kind of thing,” Cole said. “And then he pulls in the parking lot and comes charging at us."
