Momentum builds for police reform measures in Washington state legislature

Families who have lost loved ones in police shootings are watching closely as state lawmakers try to push through new measures to improve accountability and public safety.

Late in the legislative session, four bills are getting very close to becoming laws. Families impacted by police violence said the proposals could go a long way to change the culture of policing and help build community trust.

House Bill 1054 bans choke holds, neck restraints and no-knock warrants. I also limits the use of high-speed pursuits and restricts the types of military equipment that can be purchased by police departments. Additionally, the bill would only allow the use of tear gas for riots in jails or prisons or to deal with barricaded suspects or hostage situations.

All of these proposed reforms are embraced by people who have had family members killed by law enforcement.
