At Stevens Pass, epic lines, not-so-epic times amid staff shortage

STEVENS PASS — When the opening of Stevens Pass ski resort was delayed two weeks last month due to weather, lift operators were told they would get free groceries to help make up for their deferred income, according to one employee.

A few lifties got a $25 gift card to one of several grocery stores, most of which were more than an hour’s drive from the resort.

If that wasn’t enough of a perk, all of them got some food, too.

Inside each package was a box of cereal, oatmeal, a few single-serving plastic fruit cups, some potatoes, an onion or two, and a loaf of bread, the employee told The Daily Herald.

When you work in seasonal jobs as a rafting guide, forest service personnel or a lift operator or other positions in the ski industry. There comes a time when you want to make more than 18K a year.

Those who pursue these occupations need on site housing and more than a minimum wage.

"Living the dream" only works if you can support yourself.

Vail resorts are doing things to make Stevens Pass a far better area for skiing. Will be sorry to see my secret powder stashes developed, thats the price I'm willing to pay if they thin the trees to the east. Vail really needs to invest in the local workers instead of alienating them. By local I mean those who have lived and worked in the valleys on either side of the cascades.
The locals were the backbone of Stevens year in year out until last year when it became apparent what was in store for them by the new corporate overlords.
