Flood evacuations in Mason, Thurston counties

Mason County is urging residents in the Skokomish Valley area to either evacuate or shelter-in-place ahead of imminent flooding and road closures.

The county's department of emergency management says the 800 line and Ells Hill Road are already closed and inaccessible. They expect floodwaters to rise as high as 17' 6" by midnight Thursday.

Thurston County Emergency Management has issued a Level 2 Evacuation Order for the Chehalis River. Residents living near the river should begin preparing for localized flooding and be prepared to evacuate when advised by law enforcement. Forecasts predict the Chehalis River to reach flood stage Thursday afternoon through Sunday.

The Skookumchuck River is expected to reach major flooding. The river is expected to reach a crest of 215.3 feet late Friday morning. It will then fall below the flood stage early Saturday afternoon.

Flood Warning Issued For Puyallup River Near Orting

ORTING, WA — The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Puyallup River near Orting Thursday afternoon.

Forecasters say heavy rainfall means Orting residents can expect to see minor flooding in low lying areas and along the upper reaches, particularly along Orville Road East south of Brooks Road, Neadham Road, and the area surrounding the Tomolla Farm. The high water also means there is a chance the riverbanks will erode or give way, so residents are urged to steer clear.

The flooding is not expected to reach the City of Puyallup, where waters will peak below the action state sometime later this afternoon.

During the watch, drivers are advised to avoid flooded roads, and stay tuned for potential closures and other impacts. The weather service has promised an update on the flooding around 7:30 p.m.— the flood warning is expected to be lifted sometime later Thursday night or Friday morning.
