Seattle mayor unveils budget with 'unprecedented' funding for housing

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell unveiled his proposed budget for 2023-2024 on Tuesday, including an “unprecedented” quarter-billion dollars for housing.

“The lack of access to housing is the source of homelessness, and gaining access to housing is the solution,” Harrell said during a press conference announcing the budget. “And that’s why our 2023-24 will put forward an unprecedented investment in affordable housing."

The budget includes includes $228 million for multifamily housing investments and $17 million for home ownership, sustainability and weatherization. More than half of that funding — $138 million — would come from the city's new JumpStart payroll tax.

“This is the largest one-year investment of this kind in our city’s history,” Harrell said. “This will create hundreds of units of permanently affordable housing and advance affordable home ownership opportunities to tackle homelessness and displacement at their root.”
