Tacoma Narrows Bridge Tolls Drop Saturday
GIG HARBOR, WA Commuters who rely on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge will get a little bit of relief starting Saturday as lower toll rates take effect for vehicles of all types.
Earlier this year, state lawmakers passed Senate Bill 5488, which provided funding to pay off some of the bridges construction bonds, allowing for discounted tolls. According to The Seattle Times, the bill allotted $130 million over a decade to help pay off the remaining bridge debt and mandates cheaper tolls. Reducing toll rates is highly uncommon, and Saturdays change is believed to be the first of its kind in Washington
In August, the Washington State Transportation Commission settled on one of three options, voting to drop the rate for most drivers by 75 cents and by more than $2 for the largest vehicles. Under the new scale, drivers of standard two-axle vehicles with a "Good to Go!" pass will pay $4.50, down from $5.25, for eastbound trips across the bridge. Tollbooth rates will decrease to $5.50 from $6.25, while the pay-by-mail rate drops to $6.50 from $7.25.
Here are the new toll rates, effective Oct. 1, 2022:
