Seattle prepares for another king tide to impact vulnerable neighborhoods

Another king tide is expected to hit Seattle’s South Park neighborhood on Monday morning. However, the KING 5 weather team doesn’t expect it to be as severe as the one last month.

About 90,000 sandbags have been placed in Seattle’s South Park neighborhood by the city. The work is in preparation for the third king tide of the season, expected on Monday, nearly a month after December’s historic event.

“Those tides between half a foot and a foot and a half higher than what was expected. And the reason why is because we had that lower atmospheric pressure and the winds really helping drive up that water which caused the widespread flooding, some record tides for parts of the area," KING 5 meteorologist Christopher Nunley said in describing last month's king tide.

However, Nunley and the National Weather Service don't anticipate South Park will experience the same level of flooding.
