Google backs out of project on Kirkland car dealership site

Google no longer plans to purchase the Lee Johnson Chevrolet dealership in Kirkland, becoming the latest tech company to back out of a project or lease in the Seattle area.

In another sign that tech's explosive growth is stalling, the city of Kirkland said Friday that it had been notified by Google and the Lee Johnson family that the company is backing out of the deal and axing the plans for a new campus there. Google's parent company Alphabet Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOGL) had confirmed plans in late 2020 to buy the almost 10-acre dealership property.

It would have been Google's third Kirkland campus and its fifth in the Puget Sound region.

"As we continue to shape our future workplace experience, we're working to ensure our real estate investments meet the current and future needs of our workforce," a Google spokesperson said in an emailed statement. "Our campuses are at the heart of our Google community, and we remain committed to our long term presence in Washington state."
