Puyallup Tribe of Indians plans 18-acre entertainment district near Emerald Queen

The Puyallup Tribe of Indians plans to redevelop approximately 18 acres near its Emerald Queen Casino for an entertainment district, according to pre-development documents filed with the city of Tacoma in early February.

Plans for the site at 2024 E. 29th St. include a parking structure, administrative offices, a multiuse field, a museum and buildings for retail and entertainment. Anticipated development costs were not listed, but construction is expected to begin in early April.

The former Emerald Queen Casino building — which closed when the tribe's $400 million new Emerald Queen Casino opened in 2020 — still sits on the site, which also serves as a large parking lot. Recent projects include a 155-room hotel adjacent to the new casino which opened in 2021.

The proposed project will be developed in multiple phases, according to documents obtained by the Tacoma News Tribune. The first phase includes two four-story structures: a 95,000-square-foot administration building and a 197,000-square-foot parking garage. Development plans also call for a multiuse field on the west side of the lot and a museum near East 29th Street.
