King County's goal to convert hotels into housing for homeless falls short
During Tuesday's State of the County address, King County Executive Dow Constantine called the county's program to convert hotels and other buildings for the homeless "strong progress."
But the truth is that there's more work to do. The county's goal of reaching 1,600 units to house the homeless by the end of last year fell short. That number fell short because some of the buildings purchased are not open yet.
You don't need anyone to tell you the state of homelessness in King County. You can see it in several pockets throughout the county - from a sprawling encampment along the Duwamish river and the Chinatown-International District to Federal Way and Auburn.
"I was living in the street and homeless," said Robert. That was just two months ago. Robert, a self-described chronic alcoholic who moved to Seattle in 1999, insisted his struggle with alcohol and other medical issues landed him as one of the county's homeless.
