(27,800 posts)Look, I support everyone voting for whom they prefer. But at the 2008 caucuses, when it came time for people to speak on behalf of their candidate, most did not do that. They jumped up and started yelling about the Clintons (Bill too!) They liked Obama, yes, but many couldn't articulate what they liked about him, so instead they chose to reference things like Monica Lewinsky. It was awful, and I left in tears.
My advice to any Sanders supporters is just get up there and talk about your candidate and what you believe. And above all, please don't nag Hillary supporters about young voters. We're not dead yet, we have plenty of years ahead of us, and the purpose of our vote is to create a society that will benefit everyone, including us.

But the other side of the room was all frowning faces and crossed arms. There was definitely a hostile feeling. Patty and Maria.. The whole Senate should look like these 2 wonderful Senators.
6 Democrats to 4 Republicans for the US House of Representatives. Even then their Republicans seem much closer to being sensible than those elsewhere.
If the rest of the US was more like the Western half of the state, Bernie would most Definitely be our next President, AND he'd have the congress in hand to put even FDR to shame on social policies.
I have a lot of family up in Seattle, and a number of good long time friends. I haven't been able to convince a single one of them to change over for Hillary. Even from the other side of the aisle, I don't doubt for a second Washington will be a landslide for Bernie.

(4,558 posts)His positions are very progressive. Washington liberals are typically very progressive in my experience. Especially in the greater Seattle area, there's a LOT of activism.
It's a matter of idealism vs practicality imo. It's much the same as we've seen on here for much of this primary season. The anger is at the establishment. The feeling (regardless if it's real or perceived) that the government is corporation controlled and the sense that the voice of the people has been made irrelevant.
Honestly, if I saw this movement expanding to change the landscape of Congress.. I'd be feeling the bern myself. His message is great. If only there was a movement to put in a congress that would back it up.

In San Juan county, where I spend a lot of time, they have respectively gone for Perot, Nader, and now will likely - in the primaries at least - go for Sanders. I've met plenty of Ron Paul supporters, too. As you can imagine, back in 2004, they were also very excited about Howard Dean.
It's just something they do here. Pretty knee-jerk in some ways. I know people who used to be for Ron Paul and now support Sanders (I'm learning that it's not that unusual, actually).
The Hillary people were absolutely bullied at the 2008 caucuses, and I expect the exact same thing this year.

(2,531 posts)When you strip away all the hoopla, propaganda and hype, then examine the record and rhetoric and finally do so with an open-minded attitude it becomes crystal clear that we have a phenomenal opportunity in the Bernie Sanders candidacy. I won't say that we are any less biased here but I will say that I have never lived anywhere more open to and allowing for diversity of thought, expression and way of being. Compound this open-mindedness with better than average education demographics and a deep appreciation for our beautiful environment, add in an unsustainable macro-economic system, changing global climatic conditions and finally an authentic change candidate and there is only one conclusion - supporting Bernie Sanders simply and overwhelmingly makes the most sense.
And to be clear, we are not angry here. We are enthused to have easily the best choice in a generation to support and caucus for. Happy days are here again.

(27,800 posts)I read the affidavit and there is a very limited set of circumstances that permit you to file one (and not appear in person). I hope people are adhering to those rules. Basically, you need to aver that you're disabled, have to work, or need a religious exemption. I doubt if the state party will check, but I hope people who use them are being truthful.

(357 posts)...they have sent out affidavit forms, from President Clinton, with postage paid return envelopes, to many Dem voters.
I got one Monday, others reported received them a week earlier than me. Apparently they are sending them to women of a certain age... I'm 56. The State Dem Chair announced that they've received so many affidavits they are having trouble processing them... tomorrow is the deadline for them to be in the State Dem's hands.
Bernie volunteers (myself included) are very clear explaining the rules to use affidavit forms. we're straight arrows, just like Bernie.
We think HRC's teams is playing "winky-winky" with affidavit forms though...
we might just be being paranoid.
On the other hand, with all the reports of underhanded BS from so many states...

(5,751 posts)Yeah, they could have skipped that weekend. I'm an atheist, but I do have a heart!
SheilaT
(23,156 posts)was honestly unaware that it was Easter weekend.
If NM did caucuses, which we don't (or at least not since I've lived here) and they were held on Easter weekend, perhaps 37 people in the entire state would show up. Here in Northern NM where I live, thousands of people make a pilgrimage to a shrine north of the city. This is a VERY Catholic state, and probably even more devout in this part. Starting on Holy Thursday, peaking on Good Friday, but continuing at least through Saturday, the road from Santa Fe to Chimayo is all but overwhelmed with the walkers. They do stay on the side, but it's a highway that has a 55 mph speed limit most of the way, so drivers understandably slow down with so many people walking on the shoulders. Every so often someone gets hit by a car, and on occasion deaths occur.
Interesting bit of local lore, but the essential point is that in some parts of the country holding the caucuses on Saturday between Good Friday and Easter wouldn't matter very much in terms of the turnout, but here in NM it would be huge. Heck, even to hold a primary that day would probably result in noticeably reduced turnout.
LisaM
(27,800 posts)I don't think there is any excuse for holding it on Easter weekend. The Washington State Democratic party is a large, well-funded organization. Someone should have noticed this. And, in some parts of the state, not Seattle, there is some sizeable Hispanic population.
It sucks, like the caucuses weren't going to be bad enough already.
SheilaT
(23,156 posts)It's at the end of April. And while we have numerically fewer observant Jews than Christians in this country,, people really ought to pay attention to this stuff. Also there are dates for religious Muslims that should be noticed.
Of course, holding regular primaries with at least one week, preferably two with advanced voting would solve the problem nicely. You could even (theoretically) schedule the actual in person regular voting to be Thanksgiving Day or any other holiday and with the advance voting there would be no excuse for anyone not to cast a ballot.
LisaM
(27,800 posts)I will never forget that when Paul Wellstone tragically died, all the votes that had already been cast for him immediately were invalidated. That was enough difference to give Norm Coleman the election. If advanced voting is permitted, situations like that need to be accounted for. When Washington went to all mail voting (which I detest), I called my King County Council member and asked about that provision and they had no answer for me.
SheilaT
(23,156 posts)something that very rarely occurs. And had there been no early voting in Minnesota that year and Wellstone had still died, would it have made a difference in the voting?
There's always some kind of a cut off date for getting a name on the ballot, and if a candidate dies after that date, there's never really a good back-up.
Early voting means you can get to the polls when it's convenient for you. How about firefighters who often work 24 hour shifts? Or nurses who work 12 hour shifts? those people are going to be working the entire time the polls are open, so they are disenfranchised.
And of course you don't have to vote early yourself. But too many states with only election day voting report problems every single year with long lines that force some people to give up, or running out of ballots, which we've already seen in the primaries.
I'm under the distinct impression (and do correct me if I'm wrong) that all mail voting has resulted in higher participation.
LisaM
(27,800 posts)The voter participation in Washington last November was at its lowest participation level since 1932. So all-mail voting has not worked. I find it a little harder to vote by mail (and I hate paying for it). I generally walk my ballot to the county building. There are nowhere near enough dropoff spots. One of the four dedicated Seattle spots is in a park. My neighborhood is not served at all by a dropoff box, so if I do choose that route, I need to do it during the workday. Another unintended consequence is spoiled ballots that can't be fixed. I read that they've had up to 30,000 some elections. Once you've mailed it in, you can't fix it. I think that's terrible. If you vote in person and spoil your ballot, you can correct it (say you overvoted - the machine should spit it back, for example).
The number of votes already cast for Wellstone that couldn't be counted were greater than the margin Norm Coleman won by. IIRC, it changed the makeup of the Senate too. If we are to have this early voting, which I know is very popular, you absolutely have to account for this scenario. There was another race in NJ in 2000 where the Democratic candidate was disqualified for some legal issues, but in that case they successfully argued that Frank Lautenberg could be put on the ballot and he won.
The only bright side of the Wellstone/Coleman debacle was that it energized Al Franken to run for office because he disliked Coleman so much.
SheilaT
(23,156 posts)its mail voting very well, especially if you must pay for it. Oregon is the other state that does only mail in voting, and not only are the people I know there extremely happy with it, that state has the highest voter participation of any state.
Even if you have only Election Day voting, there will always be a problem if a candidate dies shortly before the election. The one situation in Minnesota shouldn't take away early voting for the rest of us.
There really is a huge problem any more with only election day voting, as I've already mentioned. Usually it shows up as incredibly long lines, especially where the Republicans in charge have seen to it that there are not enough machines in the largely Democratic precincts. Plus, I was an airline ticket agent at Washington National Airport from 1969 to 1979, and election days were always quite strange. The large majority of air travellers (at least back then) were on business, and either they'd go home for election day, then return the day to wherever they spent the week doing work, or simply didn't start their business travel until Tuesday afternoon. Plus, anyone who had any sort of problems getting to their polling place could easily be totally out of luck. Or, those who do odd shift work that might keep them at the workplace the entire time the polls are open. So early voting needs to stay.
LisaM
(27,800 posts)I don't know why the Wellstone situation sticks in my craw so much, but it does. And Washington does not handle it well. In a city like Seattle, there should be a ballot dropoff box in almost every neighborhood. They add a few for big elections, but having four scattered around the city is laughable.
The ballot is a PITA, too. It isn't the least bit clear that it's anonymous, since you have to sign the envelope you put it in. Then that goes in a larger envelope, you need to rip off a receipt strip, then you need to mail it. The first time they did it, regular postage wasn't enough, either (they did accept ballots with low postage, but who was in charge of THAT?)
The low turnout and the huge number of spoiled ballots really concerns me, but I do get that everyone can't make it to the polls.
..there are no Exit Polls with Mail In Voting.
A voter can only wait until The Media announces the "winner".
Despite the corporate selling of "Exit Polls are No Good",
they are the Gold Standard among other countries,
and always seemed to work well here....until someone wanted to sell us Black Box Voting and "Mail In" ballots.

(15,480 posts)Reminds me of the election in Baltimore when flyers were heavily distributed in black neighborhoods, urging everyone to vote but giving an incorrect, late date for the election.
Basically voter suppression efforts are targeted toward poor/black neighborhoods.
Other examples:
Misleading Information
Deceptive tactics often take the form of flyers with false voting information. For example in 2004, minority neighborhoods in Milwaukee, Wisconsin received flyers from a fictitious organization called the "Milwaukee Black Voters League," claiming that if you had already voted in any election that year that you could not vote and if you had even minor infractions, like parking tickets, you were disqualified from voting. Flyers like these are often printed on official-looking local government letterhead with the wrong election date or other misleading information. As another example, in 2008 flyers were distributed to voters in Virginia stating, "Due to larger than expected voter turnout in this year's electoral process," people supporting Republican candidates vote on November 4th (actual Election Day) and Democrats vote on the following day.
WBAL-TV, which broke the news of the morning raid, aired footage showing investigators carrying boxes away from Hensons home from an early morning raid. Henson, a Democratic operative who was working this year for the Republican Ehrlich, ordered more than 112,000 robocalls before the polls closed on Election Day last month.
The calls focused on Democratic precincts in Baltimore and Prince Georges County. The recorded message featured a female voice suggesting that Democratic Gov. Martin OMalley had already won the election and encouraging supporters to stay home.
The woman told voters to relax because Governor OMalley and President Obama have been successful. Everything is fine. The only thing left is to watch on TV tonight.

(1,052 posts)That delegates are allocated to precincts based on the number of votes received by the D Presidential candidate in the previous cycle.
And that there are some precincts in our county that will have zero delegates.
This strikes me as quite unfair and potentially disenfranchising young voters, who may be denied a voice because their parents didn't vote for Obama in 2012.
I would be very angry if I showed up to caucus and found that my precinct elects no delegate to the county convention.

If Bernie does as well as Obama -- and Obama did extremely well in Washington -- those 8 states will yield for him an extra 60 delegates over Hillary. Which will result in 260 delegates separating them instead of the 320 delegates that separate them now.
And then we will be back to the large, diverse states like New York, where she will do well.

IF the Democratic Party's rules were different, so would Bernie's chances but the Dems, (democratically) divide up the votes. Bernie would have to win 60% of the vote in the remaining primaries, I read, to keep the nomination from Hillary. He shows no signs of stopping and I would be HORRIBLY disappointed in him if he did stop. In less she gets to the winning number, he should keep trucking. He's run a great campaign.
