New warning to leave harbor seal pups alone
It is pupping season in the Puget Sound, which means we are going to see more harbor seal pups at area beaches. We will also hear more warnings to leave the pups alone. But this year, wildlife officials are a little concerned that people aren't getting it.
So far this season, five harbor seal pups have had dangerous interactions with people. A recent case in Edmonds Beach left a seal pup in the hands of PAWS in Lynnwood for rehabilitation. Two people apparently picked up a seal pup thinking it was in danger. They started to pet it and eventually its mother abandoned it, leaving it dehydrated and thin.
People have good intentions but they usually don't turn out well for the animal. "If you don't know how to care for a marine animal, don't touch it," warns Jennifer Convy with PAWS. Convy says this is the first pup the group has cared for this season and hopes to return it to the wild by the fall.
