Inslee launches 797 committee amid curious land deal near Boeing's South Carolina plant
Gov. Jay Inslee has launched a statewide council to persuade Boeing that Washington state is the best place to design and manufacture a new mid-sized airplane.
"Washington state is the best place for Boeing to build the NMA, bar none, and Im looking forward to making that case directly, Inslee said in a statement.
Washington State Department of Commerce Director Brian Bonlender said Inslee recently had a private meeting with Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Kevin McAllister that went "very well."
Inslee's announcement followed news of a curious land deal in South Carolina last week involving a state agency, Boeing and property near its 787 Dreamliner assembly plant in North Charleston
The South Carolina Commerce Department is acquiring 19 acres of extra land for Boeing's Dreamliner campus, the Charleston Post and Courier newspaper reported. The state agency filed a permit application with environmental regulators to clear the way for the acquisition.
The site is near where Boeing parks finished Dreamliners before giving them to customers. Boeing has no "immediate" plans for the property, a spokesman told the newspaper.
Boeing is leasing more than 450 acres of land adjacent to its North Charleston campus with what the newspaper called "an eye toward future expansion."
