Ban on bump-fire stocks makes progress in State House
OLYMPIA — A bill to ban bump-fire stocks cleared a House committee Thursday, moving the state closer to outlawing the manufacture and sale of devices like the ones used by the shooter in last year’s mass slaying in Las Vegas.
On a 10-3 vote, the House Judiciary Committee amended then approved Senate Bill 5992 which targets after-market devices which, when attached to a semiautomatic weapons, allows them to fire like fully automatic models.
Under the bill, it would be a class C felony to manufacture, buy or sell a bump-fire stock after July 1. Loaning or transferring a bump-fire stock to another person is also outlawed except under specific circumstances set out in the bill.
The Legislation must go through the Rules Committee before receiving a vote on the House floor. The Senate approved the bill Jan. 25 but would need to vote on any changes made by the House.
