Seattle sugary drinks tax generates $4M in first 3 months

SEATTLE – Seattle officials say the city’s sugary beverages tax generated more than $4 million in revenue in its first three months.

Julie Moore, the spokeswoman for the city’s Finance and Administrative Services department says that as of last Friday, the office had received more than $4 million in first-quarter tax payments.

The Seattle Times
reports the department expects the amount will increase because some checks were still in the mail and some businesses file their taxes annually.

Seattle began taxing sugary beverages, syrups and concentrates at the beginning of this year.

This is the latter.

It's fun to decry taxation, but there's a reason our region is significantly more livable than, say, Kansas. Taxes fund quality-of-life programs.

And in this particular instance, we're simply drawing revenue from things that sell.

We could restrict taxation to horse-and-buggy sales, or to the distillation of absinthe, or something. But I wouldn't put long odds on our ability to fund state programs that way.

consumption of these products? It does appear to be a tidy sum to add to the city's coffers and I believe it to be a great idea.
