State Democrats -- No longer confined to Seattle, competing everywhere
The 7th Legislative District, in Northeast Washington, is rural and so solid-red Republican that the Democrats often failed to field a candidate, even though the district holds three of the state's five poorest counties.
It is ignored no longer. The Dems fielded a candidate, horse trainer-wrangler Karen Hardy, in a special election last year. She is on the ballot for State Senate this year.
"We are competing in all 49 districts of the state... We're not leaving, we're not going anywhere," said Tina Podlodowski, the state chair who has rejuvenated Washington Democrats over the past two years.
The 7th District has, in fact, become a battleground in the fight to control Congress.
The Democrats are revived and kicking. In the meantime, Republicans are striving to get out every possible rural vote to save endangered U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, a member of the House Republican leadership.
