Mud is slung while 8th District candidates try to keep clean

The 8th Congressional District race, a key for control of Congress, so far is doing more to rouse the bile in voters than to race the blood of American democracy.

The open U.S. House seat is following a pattern seen across the country. The candidates' own ads are upbeat, while party committees and "SuperPACS" invest millions in nasty TV spots and dirty direct mailings. The negative often overpowers the positive.

The positive: Pediatrician Kim Schrier tells of Trump health care rollbacks that drew her into politics as one of the Democrats' women challengers who have graced the cover of Time magazine.

Dino Rossi is Dino Rossi, avuncular and depicting himself as a problem solver who has crossed party lines in the legislature. He is working to appear worlds away from the partisan vitriol of Donald Trump.

A couple of minutes later, you'll see a spot from the Congressional Leadership Fund -- House Speaker Paul Ryan's PAC -- charging that Schrier "got rich" while turning away Medicaid patients.

Untrue.

She works for Virginia Mason, which determines acceptance of insurance policies.

Such mudslinging doesn't always work,, but the CLF is doubling down. It has reportedly boosted its 8th District investment by $297,000.
