Outgunned on I-1639, the NRA stokes fear and blames Bloomberg

The National Rifle Association is appealing to its members for help, and stoking their fears, as Washington voters appear poised this November to enact one of America's strongest gun safety laws.

"When Washington citizens cast their votes in this year's election, they'll be deciding a ballot initiative -- known as I-1639 -- that would destroy the Second Amendment as we know it in your home state," said a letter from NRA leader Chris Cox sent to members.

The letter blames "billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg's anti-gun campaign machine" for "dumping millions of dollars" into the I-1639 campaign. Actually, the Bloomberg-affiliated Everytown for Gun Safety PAC has donated only $300,000 of $4.6 million raised by I-1639 supporters.

The NRA has reason to be worried. Washington is a national leader on public policy initiatives, and I-1639 is leading in the latest poll.

According to a survey taken by pollster Stuart Elway for Crosscut.com, I-1639 has a 59-34 percent lead, with just 7 percent of voters undecided. The poll was taken Oct. 4-9 with a sampling of 400 voters statewide.

that we don't need their interpretation of our initiative or their interference in our voting.

Just got my Voting booklet, and I-1639 is worded just fine. It doesn't say anything about overturning the Second. Not. One. Word.

The NRA needs to be brought down. Hard. Now is the time, fellow Washingtonians. We can do this.
