A new billboard is here to let us know: Seattle has a Confederate memorial.
Sitting along 15th Avenue East, the billboard was created by the Make It Right Project, which hopes to raise awareness across the city -- in Seattle and elsewhere -- about your neighborhood's Confederate memorial.
Unlike some other areas that have faced battles over Confederate monuments, Seattle had no stake in the Civil War. (In fact, Washington as a state had barely been settled by white settlers during that time.)
The monument, first erected in 1926, is owned and managed by a local chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy, a group that provides support for the families of Confederate veterans. The 10-ton piece was carved from Stone Mountain, where the Ku Klux Klan had its rebirth ceremony in 1915. It was then shipped across the country from Georgia to Washington.

And though it sits in the Capitol Hill Lake View Cemetery, there are no bodies buried underneath it.
Capitol Hill's statue was one of 1,700 such markers created in early 1900s.
"The Lake View Cemetery Confederate monument was put up during an era of intense racial violence in the Southa period that had also seen the Klan expand across Washington and Oregon, when lynchings became a common way of terrorizing black communities around the country," Michelle Merriweather, president and CEO of the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle, said in a statement.
