WSDOT officials still haven't said when the new 99 tunnel will open

Since the permanent closure of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, the light at the end of the tunnel has been the opening of the $2.1 billion Highway 99 replacement tunnel.

The Washington State Department of Transportation has not said exactly when the 2-mile, double-decker tube will open. Earlier this week, officials evaded questions about the tunnel's opening, saying only it's to be announced.

The region is in the midst of its longest ever major highway closure, which was originally billed as a three-week closure. The general assumption had been that the tunnel would open Monday, Feb. 4.

"There has not been a final decision," WSDOT spokeswoman Laura Newborn said Wednesday.
