Connelly: Senate bill rescues conservation fund for Wash.

The U.S. Senate, in a surprising bipartisan action, passed legislation Tuesday that revives the Land and Water Conservation Fund and blocks future mining in Washington's beautiful upper Methow Valley.

The legislation gives a go-ahead to the latest phase of a Yakima River Basin enhancement plan directed at providing more water for both irrigation and fishery restoration.

"This bill is proof our elected officials can work together across partisan divides," said Mark Bereyka, government affairs director at REI.

The bill passed the Senate on a 92-8 vote, with climate change deniers and Republicans Sen. Jim Inhofe and Sen. Ted Cruz, voting no.
