Severe conditions, avalanche risk cause closure of Snoqualmie Pass
Snoqualmie Pass was completely shut down Tuesday morning with no reopening time in sight after over 4 feet of snow fell on the highway in the last two days.
The closure affected both directions of travel on Interstate 90 between milepost 34 near North Bend and milepost 106 near Ellensburg. Heavy snow made travel conditions on the pass impossible, according to a news release from the Washington State Department of Transportation.
"We haven't seen monumental snow accumulation like this in over 20 years," said Harry Nelson, WSDOT maintenance superintendent. "We are literally digging our way out of all this snow so that we can get it back open for drivers."
Weather conditions on Snoqualmie Pass included heavy snow causing poor visibility, avalanches and avalanche risk.
