Ballard's National Nordic Museum? Designation part of federal lands bill
Less than a year after getting a brand new building, Ballard's Nordic Museum is getting some more good news: They may get a title bump.
Last week, the Senate passed a federal lands bill by a vote of 92-8. The legislation, part of the Natural Resources Management Act, is a broad package of legislation that includes 110 total bills including authorizations for the Land and Water Conservation Fund, legislation for the Yakima River Basin restoration, and a prohibition on mining in the Methow Valley.
Also buried deep in there was a new moniker for the Ballard museum, with the backing from Sen. Maria Cantwell: The National Nordic Museum.
The museum is the largest (and only) museum in the country focused on the legacy of Nordic Immigrants, from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.
"It's very prestigious for us," said Museum CEO Eric Nelson to King5. "That designation puts us on par with those wonderful institutions. It allows us to continue to work, not only to attract scholars and academics but also fantastic exhibitions."
