68,000 Kids In King County Don't Have Enough To Eat: Study

SEATTLE, WA — Some 13 million American children aren’t just hungry, they’re suffering from real hunger that can leave kids lightheaded and lethargic. That's according to new figures from the nonprofit Feeding America, which operates food banks across the U.S.

One in six children in America suffers from real hunger, also called food insecurity. These kids live in every state and every county in the nation. Washington is home to 284,480 hungry children, including 67,810 in King County.

School Nutrition Association President Gay Anderson, the child nutrition director for Brandon Valley Schools in South Dakota, said the story of the child who liked his sister’s ketchup soup concoction isn’t as isolated as some might believe. Similar — or worse — stories are told every day in America, in every city, she said.

“We’re talking about really hungry kids — the ones who look forward to getting that backpack of food to take home for the weekend,” Anderson said. “I’ve heard many times, ‘Oh my gosh, look what we get,’ and seen the excitement in knowing they’re going to have some food to eat.”

Free breakfast and lunch for every kid. And a food pantry at the school where parents can help themselves for free.

I’ve seen a few inner city schools in my area offering free food from their own food pantries, too.

My conservative sibling said “kids that grow up getting everything handed to them grow into adults that expect everything handed to them ...”

What the fuck? We just gave the already obscenely wealthy & the non-living entities call corporations a huge tax break while we have hungry children.
