In Context: Sean Duffy on African-Americans and abortion

The Congressional Black Caucus is weighing whether to ask for a formal condemnation of U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy over comments the Wisconsin Republican made about high rates of abortion among African-Americans.

The Wausau Republican's remarks, made on the House floor on Jan. 7, 2016, drew a sharp reaction the next day from one of the caucus members, U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Milwaukee.

Moore said on the floor:

"
I don’t expect Representative Duffy to understand why his comments were so offensive, nor do I anticipate him apologizing for them. What he and so many of his Republican colleagues fail to understand is the underlying context behind high abortion rates in African-American communities. High rates of abortion are related to poverty and lack of access to prevention services. A number of African-American women face multiple barriers to accessing quality, affordable health care, which can lead to higher rates of both unintended pregnancy and abortion.

"Representative Duffy’s hypocrisy on this issue is as predictable as it is offensive. If he truly believes that we all should be fighting for the ‘hopeless and voiceless’ among us, why doesn’t he stand with us as we defend Planned Parenthood, an organization committed to ensuring all communities, and especially those most in need, have access to high-quality care? ......

is 95% Whites of European Decent and the balance are Native American. This fellow appears to have a the what I would call the Brush Bunny Syndrome,if you don't look like me or my family, you are evil. Knowing the area of the District, which btw,was a Democratic District for over fifty years and most of that by Mr. Obey. With Redistricting to include a larger more ultra conservative towns and villages,Duffy bullied his way in with a ton of Koch and a big chunk from Walker's buds. One of the poorest regions of the U.S. and I dare say probably very average age level,do know it is a area depended on SS and SSDI payments as well as supplemental services. And remember Walker whacked these folks big time.

The stat I question is the median income for the district....it's one of the poorest districts in the U.S. as far as I can remember....economy is resource/extraction dependent and always has been. Plus you "can't get there from here"...there's very little air service and no bus lines...railroads pulled out years ago....

The district was gerrymandered to include St Croix County where Twin Cities Yuppies reside within commuting distance of St Paul....mostly republican.

most economically messed up in the state. Goes back to what is know as IMPACT 7. That was put together to kill any attempt by the Unions to further organize a 3 M facility and a couple of other Manufacturing companies that had moved to North western Wisconsin to find cheap labor. And it has been a mess ever since. And what you say about that Hudson area is so true, got to love them wannabe yuppies.
