Final argument against Madison Police Chief Mike Koval calls for his suspension, deliberations to start
The grandmother of a black teenager fatally shot by a Madison police officer is asking that Police Chief Mike Koval be suspended for his comments and actions related to a heated City Council meeting last June.
The Madison Police and Fire Commission will begin deliberations in a closed session Thursday on complaints filed by Sharon Irwin and Shadayra Kilfoy-Flores. They allege Koval violated several parts of the Police Department's Code of Conduct, including calling Irwin a "raging lunatic" during a confrontation in the City-County Building on June 7.
"We ask that you send a message that the chief cannot act out in any way he sees fit with no consequences," states a written closing argument for Irwin and Kilfoy-Flores, dated Dec. 22.
Irwin is the grandmother of Tony Robinson, 19, who was fatally shot by Officer Matt Kenny, who is white, in 2015. Authorities found Kenny's use of force was justified.
