Wisconsin Assembly Republicans alter zoning rules for one county only -- liberal Dane

MADISON – Republicans in the state Assembly on Thursday voted to change the rules for how towns in Dane County can withdraw from the county's zoning system — a move that Democrats called an attack on local control.

Assembly Bill 109, approved 57-34, would tweak the way towns in Dane County can withdraw from county zoning, building on legislation approved last year giving those towns more power to create their own zoning plans.

The issue has roiled local politics in Dane County, Wisconsin's liberal stronghold.

On Tuesday, the Town of Middleton chairman and a town supervisor were unseated by write-in candidates who mounted last-minute campaigns because they opposed the legislation. One of those who lost, Supervisor Tim Roehl, had lobbied for the legislation as the director of the Dane County Towns Association.
