Veteran high school teacher and school board member, Cathy Myers, believes Steil announcement will make education a key issue in WI-01 race

Janesville, WI – Today, Democratic candidate, Cathy Myers, responded to the announcement that Republican Bryan Steil will enter the race to represent Wisconsin’s 1st District in Congress.

“Honestly, I am just relieved that an anti-Semite white supremacist is no longer the frontrunner for the Republican nomination, but I am encouraged by Bryan Steil’s willingness to have a real conversation about the issues. I look forward to debating and letting voters decide who can best represent their values in Congress,” Myers said.

Since announcing her campaign in June 2017, Cathy Myers has amassed over 300,000 grassroots supporters and raised over $850,000 from more than 30,000 low-dollar donors.

Cathy Myers, a public school teacher, has served as an elected member of the Janesville School Board since 2013. Bryan Steil, a corporate attorney, was appointed by Scott Walker to the UW Board of Regents in 2016.

Myers explained, “Scott Walker’s handpicked Board of Regents is dismantling the UW System. Voters don’t want another rubber stamp in Washington, they want a representative who will fight for them. As a teacher and school board member, I’ve dedicated my life to improving public education, so voters will have a clear choice in November between an elected public servant and a partisan appointee.”

Donald Trump’s appointment of Betsy DeVos is what motivated Myers to run for Congress. Myers said, “As a UW Regent, Bryan Steil has a duty to protect public education, but like Betsy DeVos, he’s using his appointment to undermine our public school system and the Wisconsin Idea that education is about solving problems and improving the health, environment, and quality of life in our society.”

Cathy Myers, a 24-year veteran teacher, was elected to the Janesville School Board in 2013 and reelected in 2016. She is the only candidate running to replace Paul Ryan who has served as an elected official.
