I'm not giving up. I won't quit as long as can still draw breath.
My wonderful sister wrote the following late last night: "Citizens United + corruption + ignorance = lethal for democracy."
She's right of course That is a lethal combination. But we are not yet dead. Here's what I see as our course of action...
First, tackle the corruption. Investigate the many irregularities in this election. How can the following be true?
..Pre-election polls all showed a very tight race.
..New registrations were through the roof, resulting in over 200% turnout in some locales (total votes of new and previously registered voters were twice the number of previously registered voters). New voters typically tend to vote Democratic.
..Exit polls showed a very tight race.
..Exit polls showed President Obama with a substantial margin over Rmoney.
..Yet Scott Walker wins by eight points?
There's something fishy in Denmark, in Holland, in Belgium, in Luxemburg and in other Wisconsin towns and cities (yep, we've got towns with those names). Let's get to the bottom of it. Walker's thugs pulled a lot of dirty tricks like calling petition-signers and telling them they didn't have to vote, like telling people that if they didn't vote in 2010 they weren't permitted to vote in the recall.
What other dirty tricks did they pull? Hand counts need to be compared with electronic totals. This election must be proved legitimate - or not.
Then let's continue to hammer Walker on the John Doe investigation. An indictment cannot be far away.
Secondly, we need to get Citizens United reversed. There are a number of efforts underway to do just that. Without dissecting them all here, I'll simply state that in my opinion if we're going to the trouble of a Constitutional Amendment, it ought to be a complete and utter undoing of big bucks undermining our democracy, regardless of whether those dollars are coming from a corporation, a single wealthy donor, or a non-profit. It also should result in citizens automatically becoming registered voters. See Michael Moore's version here for a good start.
Thirdly, we need to educate the People. I suspect this will continue to be a daunting task until Citizens United is overturned, but we must keep at it. Our futures, and the futures of our children and grandchildren all depend on it. I would also welcome the return of the Fairness Doctrine which would effectively silence Faux Noise.
I don't expect our elected officials to do these things. It will continue to be the responsibility of our grass roots citizenry to push for the investigations, to push for the Constitutional Amendment and to educate our friends and neighbors.
