Grand Teton officials kill black bear that approached people three times and destroyed a tent

Grand Teton National Park officials killed a 4-year-old black bear Tuesday after it approached three groups of people, destroyed a tent and walked on someone’s porch.

The bear was habituated to humans, park officials said in a release.

No one was injured by the bear.

“Park rangers and biologists determined it was the same black bear involved with each incident due to photos taken by bystanders or direct observation,” Park officials wrote in a release. “There were no food-storage violations associated with these incidents.”

The first incident with the bear began when it approached a tent at 6:30 a.m. June 21 in the Jenny Lake Campground. A man got out of the tent with his bear spray and saw the bear about 20 feet away. He and his wife yelled at the bear and sprayed his bear spray, but the bear was not deterred, the release stated. It stood on its hind legs and swiped at their tent. Then “suddenly, as if something else scared the bear, the bear turned and ran away.”
