Joe Who?
Mitt Romneys Joe Clark moment of failed gravitas
If you got a giggle or two, or three or four or more, out of Mitt Romneys recent gaffe-filled overseas trip, think back to its equally hilarious Canadian equivalent Joe Clarks 1979 trip to Israel, Jordan, Japan and India. He, too, had gone abroad in search of geopolitical gravitas, only to commit bloopers and watch the media exaggerate his geekiness and ruin his image.
Like Romney, Clark was stiff and awkward, especially around the media, which his press secretary blamed for his troubles, albeit in a more Canadian way than did Romneys in Warsaw on Tuesday, telling reporters to shove it and kiss my ass.
Clark was young and inexperienced when he won the Tory leadership in 1976, prompting the Toronto Stars famous headline, JOE WHO? A framed copy of that famous front page still hangs outside our newsroom (with a sidebar story, Leaders wife isnt Mrs. Clark but Ms. McTeer an early high-profile assertion of emerging feminism).
Three years later, the 40-year-old Clark went on his foreign tour. The luggage was lost and a flight connection missed not his fault. But in Israel, inspecting an honour guard, he almost stumbled into a soldiers bayonet. In India, he asked a farmer, Whats the totality of your land?
