On June 4, Senate ethics officer Lyse Ricard suspended her investigation into the cheque Duffy received, because at that point, although the RCMP hadn't announced a formal investigation, it was looking into the matter.

A statement from the RCMP said the force was continuing its investigation "to determine whether a criminal act has taken place. It must be meticulous and carefully consider and examine all information."

The Prime Minister's Office said Thursday it has not been approached by the RCMP. "We would provide any possible assistance if asked," said Harper's director of communications, Andrew MacDougall.

The RCMP will wait until an election is coming near or some other scandal that places risk to the Tories in the public eye and then they will go public with the findings of their investigation. The outcome of these findings will be heavily influenced of course by whether their demands are met (more budget, hiring spree, more power, promises to let the RCMP run the roost as they please, etc etc). Of course, this isn't an outright extortion, just an unspoken process which has been going on in Ottawa for ages...go through every PM outside of Paul Martin in my lifetime and somehow the RCMP has had them over a barrel for some form of dirt for the agency gain or power gain. Plentt of books written on the subject.

Furthermore, even if they launch an investigation in good faith, it will cost them $2.5 Million and a year of effort to nail down the $90k...efficiency and concern for the taxpayers tab are NEVER of interest to the Security Establishment in this country. If there is a way to "build their business", justify their existence and ask for more money, these guys are there quicker than flies to shyte.

And people complain about the guy down the street on welfare... pennies compared to those who really milk the system.
