This drug is revolutionary for CF because it fixes the underlying defect instead of just treating symptoms, and while right now it only treats one mutation, more drugs are in the pipeline to hopefully treat the most common mutation. The reason Kalydeco is so costly is because there are so few people who require it (only 4% of CFers have the mutation it treats), and a lot of money was put into research. Personally, I think when drugs like this are being researched that governments should put in more research money so that the drugs can be more affordable. This drug is a lot like the discovery of insulin was for diabetes - it is unconscionable that some people are going without due to $$$.
